Timely Digest, First Black-Owned Magazine (1931)

Timely Digest, launched in April 1931 in Minneapolis, is recognized as the first Black-owned news magazine published in the United States. Unlike earlier Black newspapers, Timely Digest was styled and structured as a true news magazine, similar to Time, with monthly publication, professional review of current events, feature stories, and national coverage of Black achievement and culture.

The November 1931 issue, featuring Blanche Calloway, exemplifies the magazine’s modern, professional approach, highlighting Black excellence in the arts through a multi-column, photo-rich format that was groundbreaking for Black media at the time.

Significance

Timely Digest predates all other nationally recognized Black magazines, including Negro Digest (1942), Ebony (1945), and Jet (1951), and stands apart from newspapers such as Freedom’s Journal due to its periodical magazine format. Conceived and edited by Cecil E. Newman, it filled a vital gap in news, commentary, and cultural recognition at a time when Black voices had no presence in national magazine publishing. This issue demonstrates Timely Digest’s foundational role as the very first African American news magazine, laying the groundwork for all Black-owned news and cultural magazines that followed in American publishing history.
