Negro Romance #1 (Fawcett, 1950)

Negro Romance #1 is notable for its progressive and dignified portrayal of Black characters in everyday romantic scenarios, such as attending college and pursuing professional dreams, at a time when such representations were rare in American pop culture.

Published in June 1950 by Fawcett Comics, the series was drawn by Alvin Hollingsworth, a Harlem native and one of the first Black artists to work for a major comic publisher. Hollingsworth’s career spanned comic books and fine art, and he became a champion for positive depictions of the Black community in visual storytelling.

The comic avoided caricatures and stereotypes, instead featuring thoughtful, aspirational stories that mirrored popular romance comics marketed to white readers but placed Black protagonists at the center. Although only three issues were produced, Negro Romance stands out for its respectful depiction of Black love, ambitions, and domestic life, making it a unique example of barrier-breaking creativity in Golden Age comics.

Negro Romance #1 is historically significant as the first mainstream romance comic series to feature African American protagonists and focus on Black middle-class experiences and love stories without resorting to stereotypes.

Created during the Golden Age of comics, the title was part of Fawcett editor Roy Ald’s efforts to expand the romance comics market and serve Black readers directly. Hollingsworth’s artwork presented Black characters as relatable, educated, and emotionally complex—qualities almost nonexistent for Black figures in comics or broader media at the time.

Negro Romance not only provided vital representation for young Black readers, but also demonstrated the cultural and commercial value of inclusive storytelling in American comics history.
